The northern most province of Thailand, Chiang Rai is situated on the Kok river basin 416 meters above sea level. Chiang rai is situated on latiude 19 degree north and longitude 99 degree west an area of some 11,678 square kilometres. It is about 785 kilometres from Bangkok of Thailand. Mostly mountainous, it reaches the Mae Khong river to the north and borders on both Myanmar(Burma) and Laos.
The province is rich in tourism resources in term of natural attractions and antiquities, evidence of its past civilisation. It is also home to several hill tribes who follow fascinating way of life, Chiang rai is also a tourism gateway in to Myanmar and Laos.
The northern most region of Thailand is synonymous with the infamous Golden Triangle, the mystical, meeting point of 3 national borders (Thailand, Laos and Myanmar) historically connected to opium and heroin trade.
Chiang Rai Was founded in A.D. 1262 by King Meng Rai and was the first capital of Lanna Thai (Kingdom of a million rice fields) and later was conquered by Burma. It was not until A.D. 1786 that Chiang Rai became Thai territory and proclaimed a province during the reign of King Rama VI in A.D. 1910. The province contains Thaialnd's northern most point at Mae Sai town, is well known for its crisp mountain scenery, and hilltribes, and falls within the region known as the Golden Triangle, the area where the borders of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos converge.
Chiang Rai is administration divided in to 13 districts and 3 sub-districts.
Muang chiang rai, Chiang Kong, Chiang Saen, Mae Chan, Mae Suai, Pa Daet, Phan, Thoeng, Wiang Pa Pao, Wiang Chai, Phaya Mengrai, Wiang Kaen, and King amphoe Mae Fa Luang, Khun Tan, Mae Lao.
